ISRAEL · LEBANON
The first pilot zone operations under the June 26 framework began on July 20 in the southern villages of Froun, Srifa and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, confirmed separately by the US State Department, the IDF and the Lebanese Armed Forces. Lebanese army units deployed into Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh on July 21 after an Israeli withdrawal, coordinated through a new Washington-led Military Coordination Group for Lebanon. President Joseph Aoun met Rubio on July 19 and Trump on July 21, the first Lebanese head of state received in Washington since 2009. Hezbollah continues to reject the framework and Israeli strikes and controlled detonations continue in the south.READ ▸ Three villages is a test, not a withdrawal. The metric is whether the LAF can certify a zone cleared without a confrontation it has never yet risked.
