Far-right newcomer Abelardo de la Espriella won the June 21 runoff 49.66 percent to Ivan Cepeda's 48.70, a margin of roughly 250,830 votes, the narrowest runoff in Colombian history, per Reuters, AP and CNN. Cepeda conceded June 24 and President Petro recognized the result and began the handover, closing the contest. Trump-endorsed, de la Espriella takes office August 7, pledging a military offensive against guerrilla groups from day one.
